While dogs make amazing pets – as many of us can attest, having decided to welcome many new puppies into our homes over the past couple of years, Kennel Club figures showing that the Dog ownership has soared nearly eight percent during the global pandemic — they have important jobs to do, too. For example, their daily tasks may range from tending sheep to accompanying blind and visually impaired people in their daily lives.
Moreover, they are also experts in finding people, whether they are criminals trying to evade arrest or victims of natural disasters. There are 221 different purebred dog breeds to choose from, as well as plenty of crossbreeds, so there’s a lot of thought to go into before selecting the latest addition to your family.
There’s even academic guidance to seek out, with psychologist Stanley Coren’s book “The Intelligence of Dogs” ranking breeds by instinct, obedience and adaptability. These are the 10 breeds that make the best search and rescue dogs.

With the most sensitive nose in the canine world, with over 300 million scent sensors at its disposal, the Bloodhound can track smells that are weeks old. The dog’s long ears help disturb the scents from the ground and direct them to that amazing muzzle.

The Black and Tan Coonhound was only officially recognized by the UK Kennel Club in 2018, making it the newest British pedigree dog. Popular in the United States, they will happily follow a scent with resolute determination for miles. It is an attribute that had been used both to hunt animals (including the raccoon from which it takes its name) and missing people.
