Rescue Dogs Rock NYC is hosting an adoption event in Bayside on July 9 –

Rescue Dogs Rock NYC (RDRNYC) will be hosting a special pet adoption event on 26th Avenue in Bayside on July 9th. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Modern Pet in the Bay Terrace Mall.

According to RDRNYC Operations Manager Joyce Savino, there are expected to be around seven kittens and 10 to 14 dogs up for adoption at the event. After hosting animal adoption events roughly every two weeks throughout the spring, Saturday will mark the organization’s last event until September.

“Our organization typically has between 80 and 120 volunteers at any one time from across the country,” Savino said. “We have host families from New Hampshire all the way to Virginia. We look forward to welcoming as many of these doggies and kittens into their forever homes. [this Saturday.]”

Founded in 2015 by Jackie O’Sullivan and Stacey Silverstein, RDRNYC focuses on rescuing the most urgently needed and seriously injured dogs. The organization tries to address concerns about dogs that many shelters don’t have, such as those with physical and emotional needs after being abused.

“We want to introduce these animals to the public and educate people that unwanted pets are not damaged or unworthy property, but really can be great pets,” RDRNYC said. “Because abuse, neglect, cruelty and medical cases cost shelters the most money and are the most urgent, these animals are often the first to be euthanized. Our goal is to focus on rescuing these urgently needed animals. and immediately provide them with the routine, emergency or specialist medical care they need and deserve. We will go beyond veterinary care and rehabilitate these animals as needed using trainers and behaviorists to help overcome issues related to past trauma.

The organization recently acquired its first rescue center, located in Suffolk County on Long Island. However, they are still trying to raise funds to rebuild and repair the property so that it provides better conditions for animals and volunteers. As of July 7, RDRNYC has been able to raise just over $90,000 as it strives to reach its goal of $250,000. As the shelter is not yet ready, the organization will continue to rely on foster families to take care of the dogs until they are adopted.

Each of the organization’s animals is vaccinated, heartworm tested, microchipped and modified. Foster and adoptive homes are screened to ensure that the animal or animals would fit in, with veterinary references and checks, an interview with the applicant and a home visit.

RDRNYC has a long history of working with Modern Pet for adoption events. They last held one on November 13, 2021. This came shortly after the RDRNYC resumed holding adoption events in the spring of 2021 following the COVID-19 pandemic, holding them at outdoors to ensure safety and maintain social distancing guidelines.

After hosting an average of one event per month last year due to the pandemic, the RDRNYC was able to return to its normal pre-pandemic schedule last spring, averaging one adoption event every two weeks.
