Kathy Carroll and Sara Dallas will serve on the ALA Board of Directors

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) Board has elected Kathy Carroll and Sara Dallas to the ALA Board of Trustees. The election of the Board of Trustees took place during the 2022 Virtual Library Learning Experience. Elected Board members will begin a three-year term beginning in July 2022 and ending in June 2025.

Kathy Carroll is library director at Westwood High School in Blythewood, South Carolina. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English, a Masters in Education, and a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina. An ALA Spectrum Scholar, she has been an ALA Fellow for 13 years. She has served on the ALA Spectrum Scholar Advisory Board and the ALA Spectrum Jury. She has also been active in the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), serving as 2020-21 President. She currently serves on the ALA Task Force Transforming ALA Governance (TAG) and the ALA Task Force to Condemn White Supremacy and Fascism as contrary to the work of libraries.

Carroll said: “The diversity we want within the profession must be reflected in our representation of governance. School librarians are an essential component of the library ecosystem, and our perspective and leadership will strengthen the work of the association. I hope to be part of this critical moment to ensure that the ALA not only maintains its influence, but serves as an impactful and visionary cornerstone for our profession.

Dallas is director of the Southern Adirondack Library System in Saratoga Springs, New York. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Rhetoric and Communication and a Masters in Library and Information Science from the State University of New York at Albany. An ALA member for more than 25 years, she chairs the ALA Core Values ​​Task Force and sits on the Sustainability Committee. General Councilor of the ALA, she also sits on the Legislation Committee. She served on the board of the Public Library Association (PLA) and chaired several committees, including the Professional Ethics Committee.

Dallas said, “It would be an honor to serve on the ALA Board of Directors at this critical time in its history. I bring a wealth of professional experience in the areas of intellectual freedom, sustainability, strategic planning, building collaborative partnerships, strengthening government policies, programs, and funding in support of libraries. My career shows my ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice.

The ALA Board of Directors manages the affairs of the association.
