Jerry West Calls JJ Redick’s Comments About Bob Cousy Contest ‘Very Disrespectful’

NBA legend Jerry West said JJ Redick’s comments about Boston Celtics legend Bob Cousy playing at a lower level of competition were “very disrespectful”.

In an April episode of ESPN “First takeRedick, an NBA player turned TV analyst and podcaster, played down the level of competition Cousy faced, saying they were “plumbers and firefighters” in the 1950s and 1960s.

“(JJ) is a very smart kid and all, but tell me what his career looks like,” West recently said in an interview on SiriusXM NBA Radio. “What did he do to determine games? He averaged 12 points per game in the league. Somewhere along the way, numbers matter… JJ was definitely not going to keep players d ‘elite. So you can nitpick anybody. The only reason I’m talking about him is because he wasn’t an elite player, but he was a very good player, but he had his place in the team because of his ability to shoot the ball.”

Redick’s comments came during a debate with Chris “Mad Dog” Russo that revolved around all-time point guards and Chris Paul.

Redick said Cousy couldn’t dribble with his non-dominant hand, wondered if he ever shot over 40% in his career and said ‘he was guarded by plumbers and firefighters’ .

West said Redick and today’s players should appreciate the salary and state of the NBA now because in the 1950s and 1960s it wasn’t easy to improve their basketball games.

“We didn’t have the facilities to improve,” West said. “We had to work in the summer to support our family. But JJ should be very grateful to have made as much money as he has.”

In May, Cousy retaliated to Redick on SiriusXM NBA RadioNBA, defending players he played against like Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson.

“Less talented people will always try to make a name for themselves by criticizing others and hopefully gaining attention and maybe increasing their credibility,” Cousy said. “We must have had the best firefighters and plumbers on the planet at the time. And I was very proud to play with them.”
