Donate old bedding to animal shelters and help save dogs in need this spring

Before you dispose of your unwanted belongings this spring, try donating them to your local charity or animal shelter – RSPCA, Dogs Trust and NAWT are just a few that accept used towels and bedding .

Donations are welcome at animal shelters across the country

Spring cleaning is a fantastic way to declutter and organize your things – but it’s important that you don’t throw things away too carelessly.

There are so many rescue dogs across the country that need warm bedding, and your unwanted towels and blankets could give them a cozy place to sleep at night.

Generally, most animal shelters accept towels, blankets and sheets but do not accept feather pillows and duvets.

If you’re considering donating your old bedding, here are some of the biggest names and products they accept to make it easier for you.

RSPCA Centers

The RSPCA has centers in England, Scotland and Wales with 152 branches to choose from, meaning there is likely to be one near you.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: “We greatly appreciate donations of towels, blankets, duvets and other bedding to our animal centres.

“What may seem like rubbish to you can actually make a real difference in helping animals that have been rescued by the RSPCA from cruelty and neglect.

“Each local center or branch may need different items, so we always ask kind members of the public to contact your local RSPCA center first to check what items they might need and how to donate them.”

You can find your nearest center on their website.

Dog Trust Centers

Like the RSPCA, Dogs Trust has branches across England as well as homes in Ballymena in Northern Ireland and Cardiff and Bridgend in Wales, as well as Glasgow and Edinburgh in Scotland.

The Dogs Trust website reads: “Dogs at our centers are always grateful for pre-loved donations of towels and bedding (excluding feather duvets).

“Signage outside your local center will direct you to a contactless drop-off point.”

See the full list of Dogs Trust centers on their website.

Scottish SPCA Centers

Scotland’s animal welfare charity, the Scottish SPCA, has dog homes in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Their website says they currently accept: new towels and blankets, used towels and blankets (clean and washed), and hand-knit items.

They do not accept duvets and pillows, and currently cannot accept textile dog beds.

If you have items you would like to donate, please drop them in the donation boxes outside the centres. For all larger items, please contact your nearest center first.

National Animal Welfare Trust Centers

Those in Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Cornwall, Essex and Hertfordshire can donate to National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) reception centres.

The NAWT website reads: “Blankets, towels, sheets, newspapers, pet food and treats and pet toys all in good condition can be donated to our centers.”

To donate to your local NAWT center, simply drop them in the donation bins outside or bring them to the front desk.

You can find your local center on the NAWT website.

Manchester and Cheshire Dog Centers

If you’re based in Greater Manchester, you can also donate to both Manchester Centers and Cheshire Dogs’ Home.

These are located at Crofter’s House, Moss Brook Road, Harpurhey, Manchester, and Knutsford Road, Grappenhall, Warrington.

A statement on their website reads: “Any donation of blankets or towels will be greatly appreciated by the thousands of dogs we receive each year.

“Please drop them off at one of our homes – Thank you.”

You can find the nearest center to you on their website.

Cardiff Dogs Home

Dog lovers in Cardiff can donate bedding to Cardiff Dogs Home.

Their website says they accept all donations of warm blankets and towels, but cannot accept comforters, duvet covers, pillows, and sheets.

If you have blankets and towels to donate, please drop them off at the dog house in Llandough.

You can visit Cardiff Dogs Home for more information.

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home centers

Unfortunately, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home Centers do not accept pillows, cushions and duvets.

However, they still require specialized dog bedding, also known as Vetbed, and indoor dog runs and cages. If you would like to donate any of these items, please mail them or bring them to one of their three centers.

For more information on donations, visit the Battersea website.
