ALA elections are now open – vote today!

CHICAGO – The American Library Association (ALA) election polls are now open! ALA members are encouraged to vote online to vote for association-wide leadership that will shape the future and direction of the association. The annual ALA election will close on Wednesday, April 6, 2022.

“The American Library Association of tomorrow is counting on the stewardship of its members today,” said ALA Executive Director Tracie D. Hall. “A big part of this work is selecting peer leaders who have the vision and commitment to move the association forward. We are at a pivotal moment in our history – there is a lot of change needed and a lot of opportunity ahead of us. Each vote is necessary as it will provide a required mandate for the incoming President, Executive Council and ALA Board leadership. Every vote moves us forward towards our future and the impact we can create.

The 2023-24 ALA Presidential Election includes Emilie DrabinskyActing Chief Librarian at the Graduate Center, City University of New York (CUNY), and Kelvin Watson, executive director of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District. The ALA treasurer nominee is Peter Hepburn chief librarian at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, California.

Candidates participated in ALA Presidential and Candidates Forum which took place virtually in February 2022.

Voters will also select 34 ALA general councilors from a field of 67 candidates. Biographical information on candidates for General Counsel is available on the ALA website in Excel and PDF format.

Members can learn more about this year’s nominees by checking out “Your Guide to the 2022 ALA Elections”. The guide contains general information about the ALA Presidency and candidates, recent ALA Presidential initiatives, and information about the Board.

When polls open, ALA will notify voters via email, providing them with information on how to vote online. The emails will be sent over a three-day period, March 14-16. To ensure receipt of your ballot, members should monitor emails from: “ALA Governance Office” to [email protected] ALA members should have received an email notification confirming their eligibility to vote by February 18.

Eligible voters are ALA members who renew their membership by January 31, 2022. ALA elections are conducted exclusively online to reduce the association’s carbon footprint and improve efficiency. Those who do not have Internet access at home or at work can access the election site by visiting their local library.

The ALA Election Committee will meet virtually on April 13 to certify the election results. ALA leadership, members and the general public will receive notification of the election results later today.
